Obesity is a complex condition. It is also a very sensitive and emotive subject. Obese people report feeling unheard, ignored and misrepresented. Healthcare workers worry about offending those in their care. We bring both parties together to form good supportive working relationships.
- It can be difficult for professionals to raise the subject of weight management
- It can be frustrating when people say they want your help but quickly disengage
- It can be upsetting when you feel people negatively judge you and don't know you
We combine our many years experience of supporting obese people with our knowledge of how and why barriers are created, and share these insights through our training and support programmes.
At Combating Obesity we consider the big picture in all its complexities believing that to combat obesity we need to understand obesity. We work on the basis that people are better motivated to make healthy choices when they feel good about themselves.
Working with a range of partners including families, youth workers, social workers and healthcare workers, we aim to engage, encourage and empower.
Those living with obesity will live full, active and healthy lives and those working with obesity will feel good knowing their expertise is effective and greatly appreciated.
Using a Psychosocial approach we support obese children, young people and adults. We were named ‘Community Champions' in 2003 by Regional Office for Yorkshire and the Humber (UK) and became a registered charity in 2006. Since then we have been awarded the prestigious Winston Churchill Fellowship (2007) where we carried out field research in the USA and received Department of Health approval (2009) for our COBWEBS programme and training courses.
We support the national Change4Life campaign and are members of the Anti-Bullying Alliance.
Working together, everyone feels stronger, happier and healthier.
